Context
Türkiye was struck by 2 large earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6 on February of 2023. Turkish society as a whole experienced psychological and social repercussions as a result.
Continuity of education is not only important for development but also for mental well-being.
Educational spaces provide a safe space for both the family and the teachers, supporting the solidarity.
Research
how might we…
support stakeholders in education to acclimatise to the process of normalisation within post-disaster educational activities?
As students that experienced the disaster indirectly, we combined our own experiences and observations with expert knowledge we gathered from our interviews.
Interviews
Aimed to understand direct experiences, attitudes and learn professional insights.
Constraints
Due to the nature of the topic we avoided interviewing recently impacted people.
Research Synthesis
Formal education should begin in the recovery period.
Play therapy and socialization is the most important post-disaster.
Psychological support is important for continuity.
In order to adapt, there needs to be face-to-face interactions.
Professionals are needed as much as materials and safe spaces.
So rather than directly continuing traditional education, activity based interactive education is suggested.
Service Map
So our question became how to enable and support communication of different actors in such critical situations while fostering solidarity among children, parents and volunteers?
Wireframing
Phones become such essential tools in post-disaster recovery processes, so the system manifests in the form of an app in order to ensure the critical information flow.
